Daily standup meetings are a staple of agile teams. But do they really need to be meetings? For distributed teams, async standups can be more effective — saving time while keeping people genuinely aligned.

Why Async Standups Actually Work

The traditional standup format — what did you do yesterday, what will you do today, any blockers — works just as well in written form. Often better, because people can respond when it's convenient instead of being forced into a synchronous meeting.

Async standups are especially powerful for:

  • Distributed teams across time zones
  • Deep work focus time uninterrupted by meetings
  • Async-first culture that respects people's schedules
  • Better documentation of what people are actually working on

How to Run Effective Async Standups

  1. Choose a consistent time for posting: Most teams find early morning or end of day works best. Let people know when they need to post.
  2. Keep the format simple and consistent: Use a template so everyone knows what to include: Yesterday, Today, Blockers, Fun fact (optional).
  3. Make blockers visible: Create a way to flag issues that need immediate attention. Don't bury blockers in prose.
  4. Don't forget the human element: Include a fun question occasionally to keep things social and build team connection.
  5. Actually read and respond to updates: Async only works if people engage with the content. Reply to blockers. Celebrate wins.

The Balance

The goal isn't to eliminate all meetings entirely — some are necessary. It's to make sure the meetings you do have are valuable. Save synchronous time for discussions that truly benefit from real-time interaction.
