Channels vs Direct Messages in Convoe: When to Use Each

Convoe offers two main ways to communicate: channels for group discussions and direct messages (DMs) for private conversations.

Channels

Channels are shared spaces where team members can discuss specific topics. They're ideal for:

  • Project discussions that need visibility
  • Team announcements
  • Ongoing topics with multiple participants
  • Building a searchable knowledge base

Direct Messages

DMs are private conversations between two or more people. Use them for:

  • Quick questions to specific people
  • Sensitive discussions
  • One-on-one check-ins
  • Small group conversations

When to use which

A good rule of thumb: if others might benefit from seeing the conversation or need to reference it later, use a channel. If it's truly private or only relevant to specific people, use a DM.

Kai can help by summarizing long channel discussions so everyone stays informed without reading every message.
